A Calm Cenote Moment: The Luxury of Slowing Down

The most memorable moments usually happen when you’re not rushing to “check everything off.”

What is a cenote?

A cenote is a natural freshwater sinkhole formed when limestone collapses, revealing underground rivers. In the Riviera Maya, cenotes were sacred to the ancient Maya and are still one of the most special ways to experience the jungle—calm, refreshing, and incredibly beautiful.

Open cenotes

Open cenotes feel like a bright, natural pool surrounded by trees. You’ll usually get more sunlight, warmer water, and an easy vibe for floating and photos. Great if you enjoy wide open space.

Closed (cavern) cenotes

Cavern cenotes are quieter and more atmospheric—cooler water, dramatic light rays, and a “hidden world” feeling. If you like shade, silence, and a more intimate swim, this is often the favorite.

Safety & comfort tips

  • Bring a towel, swimsuit, and dry clothes.
  • Water shoes help on natural rocky surfaces.
  • We recommend arriving early for the calmest experience.
  • If you’re not a strong swimmer, a life vest keeps it relaxed and easy.

Our calm recommendation

If you have time, mix one open + one cavern cenote. The contrast makes the day feel complete without rushing.
